From bustling local markets to traditional Thai games, here is how our students immersed themselves in authentic Thai culture, food, and language.
Day 1: Culture, Fresh Markets, and Muay Thai
We kicked off Day 1 by heading into the heart of Prachin Buri to explore local history and practice daily conversational Thai in real-world settings.
- Connecting with Local History at the City Pillar Shrine
Our first stop was the historic City Pillar Shrine, where students immersed themselves in local heritage and learned about the spiritual foundations of Thai communities.
It was a fantastic opportunity to practice reading Thai signs and understanding cultural context.
- A Herb-Based Lunch at Baan Lao Rueng
To fuel up for the afternoon, we stopped at Baan Lao Rueng, a famous local spot known for its incredible herb-infused dishes and drinks.
Students practiced ordering food in Thai, navigating a local menu, and learning the names of traditional medicinal herbs.
- Market Hunting for Fresh Ingredients
Right after lunch, we headed straight to the Local Market. We challenged our students to hunt for fresh dinner ingredients by interacting directly with local vendors.
Students practiced essential Thai market phrases like asking for prices (Thao rai?), bargaining politely, and learning the names of fresh Southeast Asian produce.
- Working Up an Appetite with Muay Thai
With our market baskets full, it was time to work up a real appetite! We jumped into a high-energy Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) workshop.
Students learned the foundational movements, stances, and strikes of Thailand’s national sport from local instructors all while picking up action-oriented Thai commands.
- Cooking Our Fresh Haul From Scratch
To wrap up Day 1, we headed to the kitchen for a hands-on Thai cooking session using the ingredients we bought at the local market!
Students chopped, stirred, and seasoned their way through two classic comfort dishes:
- Pad Khrapao Gai (Stir-Fried Chicken with Holy Basil)
Learning the secret to balancing fiery chilies and aromatic holy basil. - Gaeng Jued Taohuu Gaisab (Clear Soup with Tofu and Minced Chicken)
A soothing, comforting soup perfect for practicing the names of local Thai herbs and vegetables.
Day 2: Thai Traditions, Authentic Feasts & Sweet Treats
Day 2 was all about stepping back in time. Our students dressed up in casual traditional Thai costumes
and spent the day diving deep into local crafts, culinary arts, and old-school games.
- Hands-On Cultural Workshops
Our students got creative by participating in two highly interactive traditional workshops:
● Making Puang Malai (Flower Garlands): Learning the delicate, patient art of threading fresh flower garlands used for respect and blessings.
● Cooking Khanom Thuai From Scratch: Students followed Thai instructions to steam up their own delicious Khanom Thuai (sweet, layered steamed coconut milk custard).
- An Authentic Culinary Vocabulary Feast
Lunch was a massive celebration of Central Thai flavors. It wasn’t just a meal; it was a practical vocabulary lesson.
Students expanded their food-related Thai vocabulary over a spread of classic dishes:
- Gaeng Kiew Wan Gai (Chicken Green Curry)
- Pad Thai Goong Maenam (River Prawn Pad Thai)
- Lai Bua Pad Goong (Stir-fried Lotus Roots with Shrimps)
- Tom Yam Pla (Fish Tom Yam)
- Lon Pla Khem (Traditional Simmered Salted Fish)
3. Old-School Fun: Traditional Thai Childhood Games
We wrapped up our 2-day journey laughing through traditional Thai childhood games.
Students stepped away from screens to try out:
● Ma Kahn Kluay (Banana Leaf Horse races)
● Duen Kala (Walking and balancing on stilts made of coconut shells)
