On 19 May 2026, Thailand’s Cabinet approved significant changes to the country’s visa exemption schemes and Visa on Arrival (VoA) program. These updates are expected to impact tourists, travelers, and long-term visitors planning to enter Thailand.
Key Changes to Thailand Visa Policies
The newly approved measures introduce several important adjustments:
- One Visa Exemption Per Country
Each country or territory will now be eligible for only one visa exemption scheme. - End of 60-Day Visa Exemption
The current 60-day visa exemption, previously available to 93 countries and territories, will be discontinued. - Changes to 30-Day Visa Exemption
The 30-day visa-free entry for tourism will remain but with a reduced eligibility list, decreasing from 57 to 54 countries/territories. - Introduction of 15-Day Visa Exemption
A new 15-day visa exemption scheme will be introduced for travelers from 3 selected countries/territories. - Visa on Arrival (VoA) Reduced
The VoA program will be significantly limited, with eligible countries reduced from 31 to just 4.
When Will These Changes Take Effect?
Further details, including eligibility criteria and conditions, will be announced by Thailand’s Ministry of Interior and published in the Royal Gazette. The new rules will officially take effect 15 days after publication.
What This Means for Travelers
- Travelers currently in Thailand under existing visa exemption schemes can stay until their permitted period expires.
- Visitors entering Thailand before the new rules come into effect will not be affected during their current stay.
- After implementation, travelers must comply with the updated visa policies when re-entering Thailand.
Future Entry Options
Once the new regulations are enforced, foreign nationals may enter Thailand through:
- The updated visa exemption schemes
- Bilateral visa exemption agreements (if applicable)
- Thailand’s official e-Visa system for appropriate visa applications
